2022-23U.S. News美國大學排名，哥倫比亞大學重回 1988！

想必，大家已經被前兩日的2022-23年U.S. News 美國大學排名刷屏，今年排名，TOP 學校變化不多，變化最大的便是哥倫比亞大學，從去年的排名第 2，直降到第 18，再次成為全場焦點。

在新排名公布之前，上周五 9 月 9 日，哥大學校長 Mary Boyce 宣布，基于今年 2 月本校數學教授 Michael Thaddeus 提出的質疑，學校已經投入大量時間，對排名數據及其收集流程進行深入調查。

調查結論為：

On two of the metrics questioned by our faculty member, class size and faculty with terminal degrees, we determined we had previously relied on outdated and/or incorrect methodologies. We have changed those methodologies for current and future data submissions, as reflected in the newly posted Common Data Sets.

在課堂人數、全職教師擁有終極學位這兩個數據上，學校采用了過時以及/或者錯誤的方法。學校已經對此進行修正，更新數據發布在新的 Common Data Sets（以后簡稱 CDS）。

課堂人數 

In some cases, class size data was previously reported incorrectly and not in compliance with the U.S. News instructions. While many of Columbia’s undergraduate classes have long had under 20 students, the prior methodologies used resulted in overreporting the number of classes with under 20 students and underreporting of classes with between 20 and 29 students.

在某些課程上，原來的數據和計算方式有誤，與 U.S. News 要求不符。夸大了人數少于 20 人的班級數，少報了人數在 20-29 內的班級數。

哥大對于該數據的定義，與 CDS 不符，導致數據夸大。現已經嚴格按照 CDS 要求修正，更新數據為：全職教師擁有終極學位占比 95.3%。

對這兩個數據錯誤，學校表示歉意：

..anything less than complete accuracy in the data that we report -- regardless of the size or the reason -- is inconsistent with the standards of excellence to which Columbia holds itself. We deeply regret the deficiencies in our prior reporting and are committed to doing better.

就在 U.S. News 排名公布之前，哥大發布了更新之后的 CDS 數據。

今年 2 月，哥大數學教授 Michael Thaddeus 提出多項質疑。他指出，top-tier 一流大學在排名中一般波動不大。極少數或有少許提升。但還沒有像哥大這樣，從 1988 年剛加入排名時的第 18 位，一年之后躍到第 8，2021 年大幅跨越到第 2。

今年 6 月，哥大宣布對排名數據和收集流程進行調查，暫不為 U.S. News 最佳大學本科排名提供數據。

U.S. News 曾就 2021 年秋季數據對哥大發出多次詢問。因一直沒有收到學校答復，今年 7 月，U.S. News 從去年發布的 2022 大學排名中把哥大移除，列為 Unranked。

有意思的是，在剛剛發布的 2023 美國大學排名中，哥大重回排名榜。只不過，這次，重新回到 1988 年的第 18 名。這是近 20 年來，哥大第一次掉出前 10 名之外。

對此，U.S. News 解釋說：

We are not confident in the accuracy of the data Columbia submitted and did not use any prior year data.

For the 2022-2023 rankings, Columbia’s rank was calculated with data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, data from the peer assessment survey conducted by U.S. News, the College Scorecard and assigned competitive set values for data where no third-party data exists. Based on those data sets, Columbia ranks No. 18 in national universities.

由于對哥大數據缺乏信心，我們沒有采用哥大提供的往年數據。2022-23 排名，是根據美國教育部統計數據、U.S. News 同行評價、College Scorecard 等其他數據來源。綜合這些數據，哥大在美國大學中排名第 18。

U.S. News 為 11,500 所大學、數以千計獨立項目發布最佳排名。每年有大約 0.1% 的學校出現數據問題。但像哥大這樣曾位居第 2 的歷史悠久著名藤校出現問題，確實非常少見。

盡管哥大為修正數據作出努力，并宣布不為 2022-23 U.S. News 排名提供數據，U.S.News 仍然發布了這個排名上的大幅落差，再次讓哥大成為輿論焦點。

兩個發布時間如此接近，似乎暗示著，各方試圖協調到最后一分鐘的多場拉鋸戰。
